Mother abandons 2-year-old in busy grocery store

A woman is suspected of leaving her young child at a Riverside grocery store - on goal - and has since dropped off the radar, police say.

"In my whole career I have never seen anything where out-of the blue someone leaves their kid in a crowded grocery store like this", Riverside Police Officer Ryan Railsback told Fox 11 Los Angeles. Through investigation officers learned that the woman walked into the store with the toddler by her side. Now, they are asking for the public's help in finding the the person who allegedly abandoned their child. Alan Engle, a single father of three daughters, came to the Food 4 Less with a teddy bear to give to police for the little girl. While inside the store the child wandered off. The woman continued shopping and as she was shopping a good samaritan brought the child to her.

Police said the mother is seen on security video checking out at the cash register and then left without her toddler, who Mattson said didn't have a clue.

CBS2's Jasmine Viel reported the woman could face felony child abandonment charges if she is located by police.

The girl was placed in the custody of Child Protective Services.

Watching the surveillance video, the child was able to identify the woman as her "mommy", police said.

Police describe the woman as 20 to 30 years old with dark hair, her race is unknown. Police said she may have portions of her right arm covered in tattoos.
