Ikea's Smart Lighting is here to outshine Philips Hue

Trådfri, meaning wireless in Swedish, is now only available in selected European markets but is expected to launch globally at the end of March. Hopefully, that sounds appealing, because their new TRÅDFRI smart lighting system is on the way!

What is clear is that this is priced to compete with prices starting from just £15 for a dimmable bulb with panels created to fit Ikea kitchen cabinets for around £70.

Users can choose an appropriate light for different situations, so one for early mornings, another for late evenings and a third for cooking or working at home - all from the same lightbulb, with the system allowing them to dim, turn off, turn on, and switch from warm to cold light using a remote control or the TRÅDFRI app.

Would you consider IKEA smart lighting instead of one of the other offerings around?

Although the lights are going on sale in the United Kingdom for the first time, customers in Europe have been able to get their hands on the remote controlled solutions since September a year ago. You will need to splash out $28.49 on a gateway controller for any of this to work however.

The range features energy-efficient white LED lightbulbs, light panels for walls and ceilings, and light doors that can be built into IKEA's METOD kitchen.

Ikea is also using its furniture-building heritage to great effect by providing "light doors" that can be installed directly into existing cabinets.

Prices will start at around £69 for the Gateway kit which includes two white LED bulbs, a gateway that connects to your router and a remote control. For more information you can check out the IKEA press release or the US IKEA website.

Products in the Swedish home furnishing giant's Smart Lighting Collection, which arrives in United Kingdom stores next month, include LED bulbs, lighting panels and doors which come complete with a new phone app enabling users to personalise and more efficiently manage the lighting in their home.

IKEA gives a March 31 availability date for the lighting range in Sweden, with the range expected to arrive in the U.K in April, making them likely to roll out to other countries soon.
