Severe weather threat upgraded

New Orleans is just on the edge of the area where the National Weather Service says they're monitoring for a possible tornado watch. Those storms could be accompanied by tornadoes, damaging straight-line winds and large hail. The greatest tornado risk was centered over southern Alabama. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has also been issued for Trinity and Polk counties until 2 p.m. Rain and storm chances increase dramatically Sunday afternoon.

A tornado with peak winds of 110 mph (180 kph) traveled for almost 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) on the ground in the rural community of Breaux Bridge, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) west of Baton Rouge, the National Weather Service reported.

The bad weather could start as early as daybreak for west Alabama, according to the National Weather Service. Several inches of rain will be possible as the system rolls through.

The severe weather threat will shift farther east on Monday, Strait said.

The storms are extremely unsafe and by no means close to being over, Gov. John Bel Edwards warned residents this afternoon. Straight line winds could reach upward of 80 miles per hour (130 kph) winds.

The Storm Prediction Center has all metro Atlanta and most of north Georgia under an enhanced risk for a severe storm.

But computer forecast models are not in sync, so there is not enough confidence to sound the alarm for Wednesday yet, the weather service said.

By noon Sunday, hail, unsafe winds and street flooding had been reported in some regions.

Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome and officials from the Mayor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (MOHSEP) urges residents to take precaution due to the anticipated severe weather threat.
