Facebook launches new 'virtual reality' meeting space for friends

You can download Facebook Spaces from the Oculus Store free of charge. While the interface is clearly intended for Oculus Touch controllers, it is possible to launch and operate the app with an HTC Vive headset and its motion controllers.

The company also introduced Facebook Spaces, which is essentially just Second Life integrated with Facebook and powered by virtual reality headsets. Check out some of these features in action.

Separate and apart from the Oculus deal, Facebook has already pumped $250 million into VR research and development.

It's unclear how Facebook Spaces' overall interface works as Franklin only demonstrated people playing games or acting goofy in their virtual worlds.

Considering Facebook's software is in beta, and Revive hasn't been optimised for this particular app, this is a promising start and should only improve from here.

With this concept, Facebook wants to make VR more social and interactive as opposed to being a solo experience. Facebook Spaces, which is still now in beta (it's still in development and being tested), is a VR platform that allows users to mix and mingle with their online friends in a virtual world, cartoon characters and all.

After choosing an avatar, users can hangout with their Facebook friends in the virtual world and show them their Facebook photos and videos including 360 degrees videos. Mark Zuckerberg himself took the stage to make painful jokes about Fast and Furious and opine on how Facebook wants to dominate what he sees as the next major platform: Augmented reality. "In the future, it will continue to transform the way people around the world stay connected with their communities and those closest to them", she added. Before you ask, Facebook Spaces is the company's first social VR app.

A Facebook Space is where those virtual avatars interact.

That's also why Spaces is limited to up to four participants and why you can't move around too much once you're in a space. Users can also use a virtual selfie stick to capture memories made in VR, and the availability of content from Facebook accounts that the user follows can help friends to find content that inspires those memories together.

If you get exhausted of your friends, Facebook included the ability to mute them or wholesale remove them from your virtual space.
