Cigarette Packs Could Cost At Least $13 Apiece Under New Legislation

In an effort to cut down the number of NYC smokers by 160,000 within the next three years, Mayor Bill de Blasio introduced legislation Wednesday afternoon that would raise the minimum price on a pack of cigarettes from $10.50 to $13 - "the highest price floor in the nation", the mayor said.

Bootlegging of cigarettes (and alcohol, also highly taxed in New York) costs the state almost $2 billion in tax revenue each year.

Right now the lowest price for a pack of cigarettes in the city is $10.50 a pack.

Speaking at the American Heart Association in Midtown, Hizzoner announced a package of five bills that included raising the minimum price to what he called the highest in the country.

De Blasios' predecessor Michael Bloomberg began leading a charge to stub out smoking in the city in 2002, when the smoking rate was 22 percent.

"Big tobacco is public enemy No. 1 when it comes to public health", Mayor Bill de Blasio said.

The mayor says he also wants to license and cap tobacco sellers and e-cigarette retailers.

"These companies have used the same playbook for decades, and we can no longer sit by while the next generation becomes addicted", said Mayor Bill de Blasio". Requiring all residential buildings to create a smoking policy and disclosing it to both current and prospective tenants 5. Another piece of legislation bans pharmacies-or retail stores that have pharmacies-from selling tobacco products, including cigarettes, a longtime goal of anti-smoking activists.

All of the bills in question will be heard in committee on April 27, and have enough backing to make their passage all but certain.
