1st tropical depression of season forms far from land

The subtropical depression that had been lingering between Bermuda and the Azores strengthened into a depression tropical storm yesterday morning before becoming a storm later in the day.

The storm is forecast to be absorbed by an extra tropical low pressure system on Friday.

Arlene has sustained winds of 45 miles per hour and is no threat to land.

The hurricane center said April tropical storms are rare and Arlene is only the second on record in the satellite era. The tropical depression is now west of the Azores.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami forecasts the storm to dissipate by Friday. It's also the farthest north a tropical storm has formed in the Atlantic so early in the season. Eastern on Thursday, with top sustained winds of 45 miles per hour.

It's not unheard of to see storms form early, as the official season is a human construct, and it doesn't necessarily signal a busy season ahead. Subtropical Depression One as it's been named, has been detected, developing almost six weeks earlier than usual.

Subtropical systems tend to be less organized, and lack the tell-tale shape of a tropical storm or hurricane.

Most forecasters cited potential development of El Nino later this summer as part of the reason for a near-normal season. They are assigned a number or name, just like a tropical depression or storm.

The official start of hurricane season in the Atlantic basin is June 1st.
