Flying auto successfully completes maiden flight

Lilium said: "We will see businesses spring up around the Lilium Jet, offering air taxi services and other new models of transportation".

Uber, Google and Airbus have reportedly been working on flying cars, but the Munich startup Lilium has beat them to it.

Lilium, founded in 2015, said it has completed a series of "rigorous flight tests" on its flying auto, "the first zero-emission electric plane capable of Vertical Take-Off and Landing [VTOL]". What gives the Lilium potential to become a great personal jet (or flying auto, if you prefer to call it that) is that it doesn't need a runway.

During the flight tests, which took place on the 21 April, the jet executed a range of complex manoeuvres.

Lilium co-founder and CEO Daniel Wiegand is excited by the breakthrough, and said: "Seeing the Lilium Jet take to the sky and performing sophisticated maneuvers with apparent ease is testament to the skill and perseverance of our awesome team".

According to Lilium, its air taxi will be "jet-powered", though this means it uses 36 ducted fans run by electric motors rather than using gas turbines.

Due to the low-priced of operation, Lilium Jet actually plans to cover routes generally made by cars - but at least 5x faster.

To illustrate in real terms what kind of benefits the Lilium Jet could bring to urban transit times, the company provides the example of getting from Manhattan to JFK airport: a trip that's usually just south of an hour by vehicle would take about 5 minutes using the Lilium Jet. The Jet can travel more than 300 kilometers (186.4 miles), with a top speed of 300 kilometers per hour.

The Lilium Jet is here to change the way transport works thanks to totally zero emissions electric powered flight.

Slovakian firm AeroMobil said at a vehicle show in Monaco on Thursday that it would start taking pre-orders for a hybrid flying auto that can drive on roads.
