Unilever sales growth beats the predictions

Unilever's share price has slipped marginally lower in London this morning, having lost 0.32 percent to 3,937.50p as of 08:12 BST, underperforming the broader United Kingdom market, with the benchmark FTSE 100 index having climbed into positive territory and now standing 0.16 percent higher at 7,130.03 points.

Year-on-year turnover in the three months to the end of March increased 6.1% to €13.3bn (£11.1bn).

Tellingly, the company has reported separate figures that exclude sales of spreads for the first time.

The firm said it expected to deliver sales growth of 3% to 5% for the year. They show turnover of €4.7 billion, with underlying sales growth across the rest of its food and refreshment portfolio of 3.5%.

Shore Capital remains bullish on Unilever (LON:ULVR), expecting the company to achieve its targets this year. In the markets in which it operates, growth was around 2 percent with negative volumes.

Unilever North America president, Kees Kruythoff, reacted to say, "We are excited to bring Sir Kensington's into the Unilever family". The company noted that growth in India recovered from the uncertainty experienced due to the removal of the Rs.500 and Rs.1,000 notes in November 2016, while Brazil continued to be adversely impacted by the economic crisis. "Perhaps that's because there is no need to mention it when sales growth is ticking up so well". North American sales fell 0.9 percent.

That helped to offset a tough European market where "consumer demand remained weak and the retail environment challenging".

In Asia/AMET/RUB region, underlying sales growth improved to 6.9 percent. The quarterly dividend has been raised by 12 percent.

In the first quarter, Unilever said its sales grew faster than its markets, and that its strategy over the past months had made the company "more agile and closer to the local markets, unlocking both further growth and margin".

In London, Unilever shares were trading at 3,983.50 pence, up 1.17 percent. Unilever gained as much as 1.6 percent to 48.48 euros in Amsterdam.
