United Senate Deadline for Info on Passenger Removal Missed by Airline

United CEO Oscar Munoz will not become chairman of the company's board next year as planned, the latest move taken by the airline to contain fallout over a passenger-dragging incident at O'Hare International Airport earlier this month.

When asked whether a face-to-face apology from United chief executive Oscar Munoz to his client, David Dao, would be helpful, Demetrio said such a gesture would "probably not go very far".

In a reversal of his earlier employment agreement, Munoz has opted to leave "future determinations related to the Chairman position to the discretion of the Board", United said in a US Securities and Exchange Commission filing.

Dao's forceful removal by three aviation officers, who yanked him from his seat and dragged him bloodied through the aisle, was captured on now-viral video by fellow passengers. Former Air Canada CEO Robert Milton is now the non-executive chairman of United's board.

The company also revealed Friday that a new 2017 compensation program for Munoz, along with that of other executives, will be more closely tied to improved customer satisfaction.

Munoz is now a member of the board, and he was scheduled to take on the role of chairman at the company's 2018 annual stockholder meeting.

The move effectively postpones indefinitely Munoz adding board chairman to his title.

Mr. Munoz was also paid $18.72 Million past year, according to the filing.

Munoz, a former railroad executive who took over United in 2015, had already been pressured by activist investors to improve the airline's performance, including in customer relations.

The officers who removed Dao have been suspended by United, and the airline has said that it will no longer use police to remove passengers and that it is requiring crew to be booked at least 60 minutes before the plane departs, USA Today reported.

The incident, and the company's response, sparked global outrage.

In his first public statement, the executive had appeared to place the blame on Dr Dao, describing him as "disruptive and belligerent". He finally appeared on ABC's "Good Morning America" with a more contrite message and promised a full review of United's policies regarding oversold flights.
