Scott Walker praises Donald Trump's 'aggressive action' in US-Canada dairy dispute

Officials say Canada is not likely to challenge the new tariff legally under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NFTA) or with the World Trade Organisation until next year.

The National Association of Home Builders says with a tariff on Canadian lumber, house prices could jump by 6.5 percent, raising the cost of a new home to $900,000.

In a description of Trump's phone calls to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President Enrique Peña Nieto, the White House said Trump "agreed not to terminate NAFTA at this time and the leaders agreed to proceed swiftly, according to their required internal procedures, to enable the renegotiation of the NAFTA deal to the benefit of all three countries". -Canada trade relationship only needed "tweaking".

Trudeau's comments come a day after the U.S. announced duties of up to 24 per cent on softwood timber entering from Canada.

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order that will direct his new agriculture secretary to identify and eliminate what Trump says are unnecessary regulations that hurt farmers and rural communities.

Canadian leaders are pushing back after the Trump administration slapped 20% tariffs Monday night on Canadian lumber, along with individual tariffs on five specific firms that ranged from 3% to 24%.

"Up until then it appeared as though Canada was not at all interested in acting", Walker said.

That's the reason why despite the repeated cycles of disputes over the past four decades the two sides have always come to a deal, she said. They applauded the Trump administration action, saying that enforcing fair trade laws and leveling the playing field could increase the domestic industry's employment.

Trudeau's government, however, offered a more detailed read-out of the call and said Trudeau "refuted the baseless allegations" by the U.S. Commerce Department about Canadian softwood lumber.

Canada's Carr rejected any suggestion that Canada was not playing by the rules.

Canada's lumber exports to the US each year are valued at about $6 billion.

The president spoke at a U.S. Capitol ceremony hosted by the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum to mark the unveiling of its new conservation and research center. "It's goofy stuff, unbecoming of our relationship, and frankly unbecoming of the leader of our country", said Blanchard, a MI governor before heading to Ottawa in the 1990s.

Ross alleged that Canada was subsidizing its lumber companies to allow them to sell the product into the United States market at low prices. Canada's main stock index .GSPTSE notched a two-month high.

He says a lot of minds finally changed in the US on meat labelling, in part, because Canada produced a list of potential retaliation. Ross told the newspaper that if the talks with Mexico and Canada go much beyond December, it would be hard to get the pact ratified by Mexico.
