USS Carl Vinson exercises with Japan air force

North Korea marked Tuesday's anniversary of the founding of its military with artillery drills, celebrations that took place as a U.S. guided missile submarine docked in South Korea and U.S. Navy ships conducted exercises with South Korea and Japan.

The United Nations Security Council will hold special ministerial meeting Friday to discuss further sanctions on the regime in Pyongyang, but first, Trump has called all 100 senators to the White House Wednesday for a briefing on North Korea. He said such comments from North Korea, while disturbing, are generally much more bark than bite.

A USA submarine is set to join the USS Carl Vinson in drills near the Korean Peninsula, South Korean military officials said Monday. Separately, the destroyer USS Fitzgerald was conducting drills with a Japanese destroyer in the Sea of Japan, east of the peninsula.

The U.S.is sending the Vinson to waters near the Korean Peninsula in a show of force amid concerns about North Korea's nuclear and missile development.

"We are closely watching the North Korean military's movements around Wonsan while maintaining a firm preparedness", the South Korean military said in a statement.

It said the exercises demonstrate a shared commitment to security and stability in the region and underscore America's flexibility in combining with allied naval forces "in response to a broad range of situations".

North Korean Defense Minister Pak Yong Sik said Monday that "the situation prevailing on the Korean Peninsula is so tense that a nuclear war may break out due to the frantic war drills of the USA imperialists and their vassal forces for aggression", according to The Associated Press.

The nuclear-powered USS Michigan submarine approaches the southeastern South Korean port city of Busan, April 25, 2017.

The day coincides with the anniversary of the establishment of the North's military.

This time, the Navy has been publicizing the strike group's progress towards the region, posting photos over the weekend of its exercises with the Japanese military in the Philippine Sea.

The Maritime Self-Defense Force had already conducted an exercise involving its destroyers and the US nuclear-powered carrier Carl Vinson on Sunday and Monday in the Philippine Sea. US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis are also to brief the Senate on Wednesday on Washington's potential moves vis-à-vis Pyongyang.
