Elderly woman beat attacker with walking stick before death

The found Butler at the scene and arrested him on charges of assault and elder abuse.

A makeshift shrine with candles and flowers was erected on the driveway and tucked into the chain link fence of Petrus' neatly manicured one-story yellow home with meticulously trimmed shrubs.

Police say a young man attacked to the two women Wednesday morning while they walked around a high school track near Sacramento. Neven Glen Butler, 18, was arrested that afternoon on unrelated sexual assault and elder abuse charges and homicide detectives were able to tie him to the scene of of the assault on Petrus.

The man punched and kicked the two women, as another person at the track called authorities.

Denise Gore lived next door to Fusako for 55 years and said she was like family.

Apparently the suspect attacked the younger woman first and the older woman tried to come to her aid. The woman had injuries to her face, and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The second victim was 61 years old and was treated at the scene.

"It would not surprise me if they were to file a homicide charge in light of what we've heard", said Linda Parisi, who was appointed to be Butler's public defender on Friday. He later dropped out of school.

Butler was known as a class clown who didn't take his studies seriously, Robert Hills told The Sacramento Bee.

Officials said the motive for the attack was sexual assault.

Petrus' attempt to stop the attack on her friend "represented the strong kind of woman she was", Hines said. She says Petrus gave her life to save her friend.

At that point, Butler allegedly sexually assaulted both women before causing the injuries that authorities say resulted in the victim's death.

According to detectives, Butler sexually assaulted a 61-year-old woman on the track. That's the same day Petrus died. When the woman's friend, later identified as 86-year-old Fusako Petrus tried to fight off Butler, Butler then attacked her.

Suspect Chanel Lewis is being held without bail after a breakthrough in a months-long investigation into the alleged murder of a jogger. He will be arraigned on the new charges on Monday. She was attacked two days ago while walking on the school's track.

This version corrects that the suspect's last name is Butler, not Butle. Tony Turnbull said Petrus was walking at her own pace, ahead of her 61-year-old exercise partner.

"That is how it all started", Turnbull said.

Petrus" neighbour, Julia Ortiz, told KCRA that she was a "very sweet person" and was "always smiling'.

Police say a man was arrested later Wednesday in connection with a separate assault several miles away.
