Hamas says Ismail Haniyeh chosen as Islamic group's leader

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu symbolically tossed a Hamas policy paper into a bin that set out an apparent softening of Palestinian Islamist group's stance towards the country.

"Ever wonder what fake news is?" Netanyahu asked as he crumpled it up and picked up a waste basket.

The document accepts the idea of a Palestinian state in territories captured by Israel in the Six Day War of 1967, but dismisses the establishment of the State of Israel as "illegal", asserting a Palestinian claim to the entire land of Israel, and a so-called right of return for all descendants of refugees. "The New York Times headline called this 'moderation'".

The New York Times reported today that the selection of Haniya is meant to soften Hamas' image as as terrorist organization as it tries to gain more influence among Palestinians in general, thus also those living in the West Bank.

"Hamas is ready to initiate a new phase of its history".

By default, this implies a grudging recognition of the reality that what exists on the other side of these borders should remain intact, namely Israel.

The Israeli government has said the document aimed to deceive the world that Hamas was becoming more moderate. It also said it would not recognize the Oslo Accords.

"As partners with our Hamas brothers in the struggle for liberation, we feel concern over the document", said Islamic Jihad's deputy leader, Ziad al-Nakhala. "The PA has chose to stop financing the Hamas "coup" in Gaza and we will reiterate the demand that Israel stop deducting funds from our revenues in favor of Hamas and its coup".

"Hamas murders women and children", Netanyahu said.

"They dig terror tunnels and have launched thousands upon thousands of missiles at Israeli civilians. It brainwashes Palestinian kids in suicide kindergarten camps".

"So, where does this hate-filled document belong?" he concludes with a question. If Hamas can gain control of the PLO, it will secure the legitimacy it needs to rule all the Palestinian territories.

"Hamas's document is a smoke screen", he said in a statement shortly after the Hamas document was released. Some political analysts and United Nations officials believe a more regular engagement with Hamas's political wing could help moderate the group's overall position.

Meanwhile, the military wing became increasingly influential in Gaza. The newly elected leader offered words of support to those taking part in the protest: "You are our number one priority in our thoughts and work".

To subvert Israel's power and its exercise of the right to self-defense, Hamas will employ diplomatic, legal, and propaganda means, using diplomatic pressures, resolutions of worldwide institutions, sanctions, and rulings of global courts.
