AAP takes EVM protest to Election Commission

Representatives of seven national parties and 48 state parties were invited by the poll panel for the meeting at the Constitution Club, to reassure the parties that Electronic Voting Machines can not be tampered with and were secured.

The Congress had backed BSP leader Mayawati's demand for a probe into the EVMs' alleged vulnerability to tampering bids and appealed to the Election Commission to consider paper ballots in place of EVMs.

AAP legislator and Delhi unit secretary Saurabh Bhardwaj, who on Tuesday demonstrated in the Assembly how an EVM could be hacked, suggested that the voters from the booths where manipulation was alleged could be asked to disclose in camera in front of a judicial magistrate which candidate they voted for and the answers could be tallied with EVM records.

The Election Commission will try to assure parties that the EVMs can not be hacked in any manner.

All the seven national and 35 of the 48 State recognised political parties are attending the meeting.

Meanwhile, hundreds of AAP workers came out to the streets, demanding that paper trail-equipped EVMs or voter- verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) be used in future elections.

Some political parties have some also demanded access to the machines used in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls.

"The EC had acted swiftly when the questions were raised on EVMs before the Ater by-poll".

Participating in a discussion on the issue during a day-long special session of the Delhi Assembly earlier this week, Bhardwaj claimed that a voting machine could be manipulated by simply feeding it with a "secret code".

"The Election Commission has convened a meeting with all recognized national and state political parties on May 12 in New Delhi to discuss issue related to EVM and VVPAT".

Besides EVMs, the meeting is expected to deliberate on making bribery in elections a cognisable offence, disqualification on framing of charges for the offences of bribery in elections and suggestions in VVPAT recount Rules.
