Senate committee subpoenas Flynn for Russian Federation documents

Associates of former National Security Adviser Mike Flynn have reportedly been subpoenaed by federal prosecutors investigating Russia's meddling in the presidential election.

A USA official told CBS News Wednesday that Comey had approached Rosenstein last week, asking for more resources to look into any ties between Russian Federation and the president's campaign.

Mr Flynn's Russian Federation ties are also being scrutinised by the FBI as it conducts a similar investigation.

Committee member Senator James Lankford (R-Oklahoma) told Fox News that the panel has subpoenaed "a large number of documents".

"I believe that it would be very unfair to hear from somebody who we don't even know and immediately run out and fire a general", he said.

"He also tweeted, "(former Director of National Intelligence James) Clapper reiterated what everybody, including the fake media already knows- there is "no evidence" of collusion w/ Russian Federation and Trump".

Flynn's lawyer declined ABC News' request for comment, but referred back to his statement released on March 30.

The White House relied on Obama-era background checks to check Flynn, and former acting Attorney General Sally Yates warned White House officials about Flynn before he was sacked.

"And that created a compromise situation, a situation where the national security adviser essentially could be blackmailed by the Russians".

In testimony before the House intelligence committee in March, Comey testified that the FBI was investigating possible collusion between Trump associates and Russian officials and other Russians known to United States intelligence as part of its broader, ongoing counter-intelligence investigation.

Mr Comey's sacking prompted a storm of criticism from Democrats, who accused the president of seeking to stall the probe.

Mr Flynn was sacked by the president after less than one month in the job.

Speaking with reporters earlier in the day, Burr said he preferred when people cooperate, but pointed to his willingness to use the power of the committee to compel document production. He and Warner have invited Comey to testify before the committee on 16 May in a closed session.
