Trump to meet top Russian diplomat at the White House

Speculation has been rife that Trump fired Comey Tuesday because of the FBI's investigation into possible ties between Trump's campaign team and Russian Federation during the 2016 presidential election. Trump's firing of Comey throws into question the future of a counterintelligence investigation into Trump's campaign's possible connections to Russian Federation. But usually in this sort of case, you would get a joint news conference between Lavrov and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

QUESTION: Does the Comey firing cast a shadow of your talks, gentlemen? "You're kidding. You're kidding".

When the press pool was allowed into the Oval Office after the meeting, Mr Lavrov and Mr Kislyak had left and, in a surprise, former secretary of state Henry Kissinger was with Mr Trump instead.

He declined to answer the question from journalists who asked whether reports of POLITICO that President Trump received Lavrov after Putin's personal request in the telephone conversation were true.

At issue is not just the fact that White House officials were so easily misled by the Russian envoy.

The US president recently described them as being at an "all-time low" but his talks with Sergey Lavrov mark the highest level, face-to-face contact with Russian Federation of the American leader's term in office.

Initially, the White House indicated the photo spray would be with Lavrov.

The meeting with Lavrov was the highest-level public contact between Trump and the government of Russian President Vladimir Putin since Trump took office on January 20.

The meeting came amid tensions between the US and Russian Federation as the two countries hold differences on a slew of issues, including the Syrian conflict, the Ukrainian crisis and the expansion of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

After Tillerson visited Putin and Lavrov in Moscow on April 12, Trump said flatly, "Right now we're not getting along with Russian Federation at all".

All signs are that the talks focused virtually exclusively on Syia, as Lavrov said that the USA sanctions against Russian Federation had not been addressed during the meeting.

"I never thought about it", he said. The White House has already begun its search for a new Federal Bureau of Investigation director.

Lavrov said he had sought support for a plan to create safe zones in Syria.
