Alonso threatens to quit F1

The Spaniard who will skip the next Grand Prix in Monaco to participate in the 500-mile Indianapolis with a McLaren-Honda-Andretti auto, remains determined to race in F1 in 2018 despite his current ordeal.

The Spaniard told a news conference ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix that he was happy with the team, but that his aim was to try and win a third drivers' world title.

Alonso said he would be open to offers for next year if by late summer he had not been convinced that McLaren-Honda could provide a winning auto.

McLaren-Honda boss Zak Brown said he accepted Fernando Alonso s challenge to give him a race winning vehicle for next year, and had no concerns at him leaving the circuit to play tennis after another engine failure.

Even the most casual of race fans likely have noticed all the buzz around Formula One driver Fernando Alonso running in the Indianapolis 500, but unless they're specifically fans of F1, many might think his entry is being over-hyped. "I still hope to be happy in the second half of the year", he added. We see this real power, efficiency, corner speed - things which we were missing in the last couple of years. "I Have had it written in all my contracts like that since 2004".

Fernando Alonso continues to drop hints about an impending McLaren F1 exit as the two-time champion considers his options for 2018.

"Now is not the time for me to think of this", he said. "I don't know the reason why the oil leaked, but that is the reason why it blew".

"I like this F1".

He said he was enjoying this year's racing in the new "fatter and faster" cars. "Formula One is back in a way". I like this Formula 1.

The two-time world champion isn't competing in the race as a public relations stunt, but rather, he's trying to showcase his talents in a way he now can't in F1.

"Our moment right now is not the best", he said. "At the end of the day, we've had some good Fridays and Saturdays but bad Sundays, so I have feeling this one will be a bad Friday but a good Sunday".

Yusuke Hasegawa: "Today was unfortunately a tough day for Fernando at his home grand prix".

"For now we are uncompetitive and unreliable but the year is long, we can do important steps and improvements". "It's tough, but tougher for McLaren, who bring updates trying to find a millisecond here and there and we can not even run".

"We also need to raise our game with reliability and hopefully finish with both cars in this race".
