Brazil calls off Zika emergency

The national state of emergency regarding the Zika virus is over, Brazil's Ministry of Health announced.

From January through mid-April, the Ministry of Health recorded 95 percent fewer cases than during the same period previous year. From January till mid-April 2017, Brazil recorded 95 percent fewer cases than during the same period in 2016 when there were 170535 cases. Microcephaly, which is shown to cause birth defects, an enlarged head, and stunted speech in newborns, affected thousands of children after the initial outbreak. The threat was at its peak as Brazil prepared to host the 2016 Olympics.

Throughout her pregnancy, Suastegui underwent monthly tests to see if her baby could be born with Zika-related complications, like an abnormally small head.

In November 2016, the World Health Organisation (WHO) lifted its own global health emergency status for Zika. This development is what prompted officials to declare an end to the public health emergency. The games were feared to further spread the virus, and countries around the world were reporting increased infections.

A new study has paved the way for a promising vaccine for the Zika virus.

In response to the outbreak, Brazil launched a campaign targeted at eradicating mosquitos in the country.

"The main axis to avoid the cases of the three diseases is to continue the combat against the mosquito Aedes aegypti", stated the secretary.

"The Health Ministry and other organisations involved in this area will maintain a policy of fighting Zika, dengue and chikungunya", the official added. People infected with Zika usually suffer mild, flu-like symptoms and recover quickly, while pregnant women can give birth to babies with severe defects. Many would-be travellers cancelled their trips to Zika-infected places.

This move came after a reported fall in the number of cases.
