England's emergency units open 'as normal' again after cyber attack

Australian organisations will return to work as the local fallout from the weekend's global cyber attack becomes clearer.

In light of the attack, justice secretary Michael Matheson said the Scottish Government is taking action to enhance security, including contacting more than 120 public bodies to ensure they have appropriate defences in place. "The National Cyber Security Centre is working with all organisations here in the United Kingdom that have been affected and that's very important".

In a statement, the company said, "We are implementing remediation steps as quickly as possible".

Elsewhere in Asia, the Indonesian government urged businesses to update computer security after the malware locked patient files on computers in two hospitals in the capital, Jakarta.

"NCSC and NCA are working with Europol and other global partners to make sure we all collect the right evidence, which we need to do to make sure we have the right material to find out who has done this and we go after them".

Now on Monday, a security risk management expert told CNBC that even Apple is vulnerable to similar cyber-attacks.

"We wouldn't be surprised if the scale and scope of Wannacry leads to another spike in IT security solutions and associated revenue spend", said Northern Capital Trust analyst Neil Campling.

"There are things you can do that everyone can do (.) in particular making sure that our data is properly backed up and making sure that we are using the software patches", he said.

This could be because schools tend to have old computers and be slow to update operating systems and security, said Mr Fang Xingdong, founder of ChinaLabs, an internet strategy think tank.

At Indonesia's biggest cancer hospital, Dharmais Hospital in Jakarta, around 100-200 people packed waiting rooms after the institution was hit by cyber attacks affecting scores of computers.

However this did not materialise and Hunt told the BBC that, despite the cancellation of numerous patient appointments and operations, 80% of the NHS was "unaffected".

On Friday, May 12, 2017, a damaging ransomware attack swept across more than one hundred countries and infected tens of thousands of computers.

More than 75,000 similar attacks reportedly happened in nearly 100 countries, with Russia, Ukraine and Taiwan hardest hit, according to the cybersecurity firm Avast.

"The NHS has been lucky this time but it needs to take stock of where it's at", he said.
