Next challenge for golf prodigy is Kim Jong

"Because of that experience", Kim said through his interpreter, "I could be relieved and I could be very stable".

"I wasn't nervous at all because I was leading", he said of the 17th.

His ball ricocheted through the spectator area wide right of the 18 green, eventually landing in the middle of a palmetto bush.

And it wasn't just that hole. In seven previous appearances at the Dell Technologies Championship, Johnson has three career top-10 finishes, including a T8 performance in 2016.

And the Englishman is now relishing the chance to play on the tour where it all started for him back in 1995.

With 600 FedExCup points from the victory, Kim moved from No. 132 to No. 21 in the standings and is in position to make his second trip to the FedExCup Playoffs and the Dell Technologies Championship.

Kim is the second player from South Korea (the first was K.J. Choi, his hero and mentor) to win The Players.

Kim saved that for the trophy presentation, when he realized he had beaten the deepest and strongest field in golf, and all the rewards that come with it.

He not only earned $US1.89 million ($A2.56 million) in prize money but also a five-year exemption on the US PGA Tour and an exemption to the next three Masters, US Opens and British Opens plus the 2017 US PGA Championship.

"I feel like I'm still dreaming that I won this championship", Kim said after his three-stroke victory.

Kim's victory is made all the more remarkable, as it emerges he required physiotherapy to even begin his final round.

Kim had a two-shot lead heading into the back nine Sunday and was never out of the solo lead the rest of the way. "He's gone clean out there today, which is extremely impressive under that pressure".

The excitement, good and bad, came from everyone else.

Even so, Poulter's outlook sure is different.

European PGA: Matt Wallace completed an unlikely wire-to-wire victory in the Open de Portugal to earn a European Tour card. That was rarely in doubt over the back nine. He tapped in for an easy bogey.

Poulter has been reluctant to play at Wentworth in recent years as he was not a fan of the greens, but all 18 have been replaced at the revamped West Course in a huge project overseen by Ernie Els, Paul McGinley and current Ryder Cup captain Thomas Bjorn. His round was helped by an albatross on the par-5 16th hole.

The other co-leader was J.B. Holmes, and it was a horror show for the Kentuckian. He started Sunday in a tie for first.

Kim eclipsed Adam Scott, who won the Players Championship at 23 in 2004.

"If you're on your game and playing well, that the things you do", Oosthuizen said. "And that's exactly what he's done".

In this Associated Press photo, Kim Si-woo of South Korea celebrates after winning The Players Championship at TPC at Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, on May 14, 2017.

His bogey-free 69 at Sawgrass saw him finish at 10-under - three shots clear of Ian Poulter and Louis Oosthuizen.
