Manchester Arena terror attack: 5 men arrested

Manchester police has said, according to local media, that one of the men was arrested following a property search in the Withington area of Manchester, while another was detained elsewhere in the city.

Salman Abedi blew himself up as Ariana Grande fans were leaving Manchester Arena on Monday night, killing 22 and wounding dozens.

Authorities believe Abedi had help in building the bomb, which photographs published by the New York Times showed was sophisticated and powerful, and that his accomplices could be ready to strike again.

British police believe Abedi withdrew 250 British pounds ($430) from an ATM before he went shopping in the centre around 7:00pm (local time), according to Sky. He said his son visited Libya a month and a half ago and was planning to return to Libya to spend the holy month of Ramadan with the family.

Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable Ian Hopkins said police family liaison officers had alerted families of the victims to the publication of leaked intelligence.

His youngest son, Hashem Abedi, was also arrested in Tripoli, while British police picked up Ismail Abedi, the bomber's older brother, in Chorlton, in the south of Manchester.

Salman Abedi was a loner who loved soccer, smoked pot and expressed sympathy with suicide attackers, according to reports that emerged Wednesday.

In Manchester, northwest England, feelings were still raw following Abedi's attack on a concert by USA pop star Ariana Grande - especially so as the bomber was born in the city.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Ms Abedi said she believes her brother was motivated by injustice in Syria.

Home Secretary Amber Rudd, who said Abedi had been known to British security officials, complained Wednesday about USA officials leaking sensitive information about Abedi to the media, saying that could hinder Britain's security services and police.

The Manchester bombing has raised concern across Europe.

Yvette Cooper said she was very troubled by the leaks amidst a "live investigation where public safety at risk", while Lilian Greenwood asked, "What is the Government doing with USA counterparts to address these breaches?"

The Manchester bombing was the deadliest attack in Britain since July 2005, when four British Muslim suicide bombers killed 52 people in coordinated attacks on London's transport network.

Britain's political parties meanwhile agreed to resume campaigning on Friday after a three-day break, as authorities warned that another attack is imminent. Authorities found what was described as a bomb-making workshop in Abedi's home in Manchester, with enough chemicals to build several additional bombs. Two recent arrests took place in northern Manchester and in the town of Nuneaton in Warwickshire, England, late on Wednesday.

Ariana Grande has postponed her tour through June 5 following the terrorist attack on her concert in Manchester, England on Monday. Warner Bros. canceled their planned United Kingdom premier of the film "Wonder Woman", scheduled for May 31 in London, due to the terror threat, according to newspaper reports. The youngest victim of the bombing named so far was just 8 years old.

The government said a minute's silence would be held at all official buildings at 1000 GMT on Thursday.

The bombing also left 64 people wounded, of whom 20 were receiving critical care for highly traumatic injuries to major organs and to limbs, a health official said.
