South African ruling party debates fate of president

These were the words of ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe at a media briefing following the recent NEC meeting held over the weekend.

The group expressed the view, saying it was "acutely aware" of this being the case, that it was not in the interests of opposition parties to be successful in the proposed parliamentary vote of no confidence.

It was the second motion in six months for Zuma to vacate his office. "As stalwarts who were part of the struggle for a constitutional, democratic South Africa, we call on all Members of Parliament to reflect carefully on the way forward".

Both the South African Communist Party and the Congress of South African Trade Unions now stand behind the movement for President Zuma to step down.

EWN said that of the 72 participants who spoke about motion, 18 spoke in support and 54 against.

Citing sources, he said: "Voices in support of the embattled president outnumbered his detractors by three to one".

Emails between President Zuma's son Duduzane and figures from a company owned by the controversial Gupta family - who reportedly wield considerable influence over Mr Zuma - include a letter to the Abu Dabi royal family, our correspondent says.

The motion was brought by a senior ANC member at the weekend's National Executive Committee meeting.

The Sunday Times wrote in its leading article that Zuma has survived a string of scandals "precisely because most of the NEC is in his pocket".

"Many were neither in favour nor against the appeal but emphasised the need for unity within the organisation‚" said Mantashe. Hours after Zuma and his backers thwarted attempts to unseat him, the alliance partners, the SACP and Cosatu, renewed their calls for Zuma to go, with Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande reiterating his call.

"The reports rely on undisclosed documents and assumptions of impropriety resulting in a clear intention to influence political perception, which is another example of fake news", the Guptas' lawyer, Gert van der Merwe, said in an emailed statement.

Zuma warned members to "not push him too far" by criticising him in public.

The party leadership was expected to wrap up its talks during the evening.
