S Korean official suspended over US missile defence report

As for some Koreans' argument that the THAAD system is aimed at "primarily" protecting US forces stationed in South Korea, Durbin expressed displeasure.

According to Cheong Wa Dae, Wee ordered the fact that four Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system launchers were in store at a USA military base in South Korea to be removed from the Ministry of National Defense's report to the presidential office on May 25. Chances for making headway on that initiative are slim in light of Pyongyang's continued missile tests and threatening behavior toward the U.S.

The Chinese government on Wednesday expressed concerns about the delivery of additional THAAD components to South Korea, reiterating its longstanding claim the installment harms China's security interests and upsets the strategic balance in the region.

Last week, Moon's office said it had found that four more launchers had since arrived in South Korea, but that defense officials didn't mention them in policy briefings they gave in late May.

Moon, a liberal, is now working with Cabinet members who were appointed by his conservative predecessor, Park Geun-hye, who was ousted from office in March over a corruption scandal.

"President Moon said it's "very shocking" after receiving a report" on the incident from his national security director, Yoon said at a news conference.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in has ordered his staff to come up with a new guideline by August to rein in and navigate soft-landing in household debt and housing prices whose growth has been untamed regardless of serious of actions under previous administration. "And if Korea doesn't want, South Korea does not want the THAAD missile system, it is US$923 million that we can spend some other place", he said during the interview held in central Seoul right after his meeting with Moon. South Korean tourism, retailing and media industries were reportedly hit, with Beijing denying any involvement. On May 2, a U.S. defence official said the system had only "initial intercept capability", because not all its parts had arrived. A Thaad battery typically consists of six launchers, 48 interceptor missiles, a communication unit and a radar. China argues that the THAAD system will contradict its own counter strike capabilities, and Russian President Vladimir Putin has raised broader concerns over the activities of the USA as a whole. The military authorities of Korea and the United States planned to complete the deployment before the end of this year.
