Man investigated in death of child points to his wife

A body was found Tuesday in a garage in Centreville, Illinois, near St. Louis.

She says that house was left to Quate who lived there with his wife for a short time before they sold it and moved into the trailer behind it. She directed IL authorities to a vacant home where they uncovered the body of a child in a container in a detached garage, KMOV reports.

Police in IL believe the remains of a child found in the garage of a vacant home had been there four years and are investigating the death as a homicide. No charges have been filed in IL, either, though a homicide investigation continues.

Contact 13 investigated the background of the man Las Vegas police charged with sex trafficking, and IL officials suspect may be involved in the death of one of his own children.

According to CBS affiliate KMOV, the unidentified woman said that she moved with her husband, 34-year-old Jason Quate, and their two teenage daughters from IL to Las Vegas about two years ago.

Officers found the body wrapped in blankets. Police in nearby Belleville are handling the investigation.

He and his wife hid her body because they were afraid authorities would take their two older girls, who are now 13 and 11, he said.

Quate said it was his wife's idea to come to Las Vegas to work as a prostitute.

During the course of the investigation, the victim indicated she had moved to Las Vegas approximately 2 years ago, but they had previously lived in the state of IL.

Belleville police will be going to Las Vegas as part of the investigation into the child's death. The girls had not been allowed to leave the house or enroll in school for the last 18 months to two years.

The girl's mother contacted police from a woman's shelter, where she said she had gone to seek refuge from her husband.

"Obviously I am the victim here", said Jason Quate during an interview from the Clark County Detention Center. She said she would not allow authorities to enter and check the children's well-being.

Qaute has not been charged with the death of his daughter.

The two daughters had a "significant amount of scars and bruises on their bodies", Spencer said in an interview Thursday.

He also addressed a statement he made to the Las Vegas TV station on Wednesday - that his wife had told him in 2013 that she had found a family to adopt their daughter. They are in protective custody. Neighbors said they didn't have a clue as to what was happening in the home.
