4-year-old boy dies of 'dry drowning' days after going swimming

Grover said dry drowning is rare, but it's best to be overcautious since dry drownings are risky when they do occur.

Four-year-old Frankie Delgado passed away suddenly, within several days of swimming with his family in the Texas City Dike. This is exactly what the Delgado family wanted Frankie's story to do. "He said, 'Ahhh", Delgado told the news outlet. "I never thought nothing of it".

According to CNN, Frankie Delgado was playing during Memorial Day weekend in water that was about knee deep.

To prevent any type of drowning, it's important to know your child's swimming abilities and to always supervise them when in the water. A couple of days after, on June 3, the child then complained of shoulder pains and laid down for a nap.

"I love my son so much".

"Out of nowhere he just woke up and he said "ahhhh" and he took his last breath", Frankie's dad, Fancisco Delgado Jr., said. "Tell him to find out what's really wrong".

Paramedics rushed the child to the hospital, where doctors tried to save Little Frankie.

The doctors found fluid in Frankie's lungs and around his heart, and concluded that the toddler might have died from what is known as "dry drowning". The cause of death was listed as dry drowning.

If the lung's air passages fill with water, it causes blood oxygen levels to drop and the heart slows down. While parents don't need to haul their children to the emergency room every time their kids get a mouthful of water, they should watch for rapid, labored breathing.

Dr. Eric Higginbotham, the medical director of the emergency department at Dell Children's Medical Center in Austin, says the dangers - although extremely rare - of dry or delayed drowning exist even after your day at the pool.

It causes irritation to the vocal cords and muscle spasms. As of Wednesday evening, almost $14,000 has been raised for Frankie's family. My son was so good.

The best treatment, Pattishall said, is prevention. "All he wanted to do was put a smile on my face".

"There are no words to describe how heartbroken we are over the passing of Baby Frankie", a family member wrote on a GoFundMe page set. The $30,000 goal has already been exceeded by more than $6,000.
