Uber Just Fired More Than 20 People In Sexual Harassment Investigation

The ride share company began investigating at least 215 employees after the company was hit with sexual harassment claims earlier this year and has so far found at least 20 employees to be at fault in a wide array of discriminatory, bullying and other harassing actions.

Former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder is leading a separate investigation into sexual harassment and discrimination claims at company.

The investigation by Perkins Coie was launched after former engineer for the company Susan J. Fowler wrote an in-depth blog post about the harassment she experienced working at Uber. Additionally, 31 employees are undergoing counseling or training and seven have received written warnings, Bloomberg reported Tuesday.

Fowler also wrote that when she attempted to transfer to another engineering organization within Uber, her request was blocked despite a having a flawless performance score and meeting all the criteria for transferring. 57 claims remain under review and the company didn't take action in 100 of the claims, according to Uber. A most prominent example was letting go of Amit Singal, SVP Engineering, who did not disclose a case of sexual harassment at his previous workplace, Google.

The company broke the news to employees during an all-hands meeting Tuesday in San Francisco, according to an anonymous source who spoke with the New York Times. The company has been interviewing its employees internally, as well as having Perkins Coie and Holder investigate the company's workplace.

Law firm Perkins Coie has so far investigated 215 complaints against Uber's staff.

2017 has been a bad year for Uber's public image, with near-weekly news reports on the company's litigation and regulation troubles.

The findings of the Covington & Burling report were presented to Uber's board members last week. He is likely to make broader recommendations on how to change Uber's culture when his report is released publicly next week. "Anyone who behaves this way or thinks this is OK will be fired" in February.

Uber is also embroiled in a trade-theft lawsuit with Waymo, the Google self-driving auto spin-off, which has accused Uber of using stolen technology.

Uber has also hired two women in senior executive roles: Harvard Business School Professor Frances Frei and Bozoma Saint John, Apple's former head of global and consumer marketing for iTunes and Apple Music.
