Jury Deliberates For 4th Day in Cosby Sex Assault Case

The woman at the center of the Bill Cosby sexual assault trial that has a jury deadlocked tweeted a video from the courthouse suggesting she feels pretty confident. The trial began June 5.

Dozens of women have come forward to say he had drugged and assaulted them.

After 30 hours of deliberations, jurors will head back to continue discussing the charges against Cosby.

First, Judge Steven O'Neill sent them back into deliberations in another attempt to reach a verdict, which must be unanimous.

By Wednesday night, jurors asked the judge several questions seeking clarification and re-reading of excerpts of Cosby's own words about his 2004 encounter with accuser Andrea Constand at his nearby home.

Court stenographer Ginny Womelsdorf skillfully read the testimony to the jurors, several of whom looked exhausted after eight days of testimony and deliberations. One, more upbeat, nodded along.

The full context of the portion of Cosby's decade-old testimony in which he said he told Constand the pills he gave her, before their 2004 sexual encounter, were "friends".

Cosby's lawyers contend he had a consensual relationship with Constand, who is now 44.

The once-beloved comedian has been accused of sexual abuse by approximately 60 women, but only Constand's allegations have led to criminal charges. "And they're hearing Mr. C.'s testimony and he's extremely truthful". And thats created this doubt.”.

The jury says it's deadlocked on the charges, but has continued to deliberate. The investigation initially was undertaken by former District Attorney Bruce L. Castor Jr., who in February 2005 determined there was insufficient and unreliable evidence to prosecute Cosby, who was 67 at the time. But the atmosphere remains calm, with accusers and supporters even holding hands.

Bradford Cohen, a Florida criminal defense attorney, said lengthy deliberations are common during highly technical cases with numerous counts and defendants as well as copious amounts of evidence.

“It doesnt surprise me that this jury is split. "The prosecution had a strong case, but the defense was able to show a lot of inconsistencies".

The charges could put the 79-year-old entertainer in prison for the rest of his life if he's convicted. "The jury foreman has informed me that you are deadlocked", O'Neill said. "I asked her why and she said, that like the story on the news, the person who had drugged and done something to her sexually was a high profile person", Jackson recounted. "I said 'I trust you.' I took the pills and I swallowed the pills down".

The case has already helped demolish Cosby's nice-guy reputation as "America's Dad".

Jurors also wanted to hear the testimony of a Cheltenham Township Police Detective concerning his interview with Constand about the alleged assault.

Mr Cosby said in a 2005-06 civil deposition that he provided pills to help her relax, but said it was a cold medication.
