Doctor says Otto Warmbier has brain damage

Doctors say he has severe injury to all regions of his brain.

It took months of "quiet diplomacy", a change in US presidents and an American diplomat's extraordinary, secret visit to Pyongyang to bring Otto Warmbier home.

Fred Warmbier called his son's return bittersweet.

But, says Rosenberg, "Putting in place the kind of restrictions that would require USA citizens to seek a license to go to North Korea - most of that falls to Congress to do".

Warmbier slipped into a coma after a tearful public trial in which he was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor for allegedly attempting to steal a political propaganda poster.

Warmbier was released from the rogue country on Tuesday. Three other USA citizens are being held by the regime; President Trump should make their release a priority. "We hope that they will soon be able to return home", Nauert added.

These findings support his family's claim that Otto has suffered severe brain damage while he was detained in North Korea.

"His neurological condition can best be described as a unresponsive wakefulness", said Kanter. He opens his eyes and blinks spontaneously but shows no signs of understanding language or responding to verbal commands, said Dr. Daniel Kanter, professor of neurology and director of the Neurocritical Care Program. "And no excuse for the way they've treated so many others", he said.

A former teacher of an American college student released by North Korea in a coma says he's a fighter and believes he'll do everything he can to recover. The photos brought home the disturbing news that the University of Virginia student was effectively comatose because of a brain injury.

On Monday, Yun and two physicians medically evacuated Warmbier.

Dr. Brandon Foreman of University of Cincinnati Health said tests conducted at the hospital did not show the active presence of botulism.

Doctors plan a news conference on campus later Thursday.

His father, Fred Warmbier, said Thursday he does not believe North Korea's explanation that his son's condition is the result of botulism and a sleeping pill.

Three more American citizens remain in North Korean custody.

Speaking a news conference, Warmbier's father said North Korea had "brutalised and terrorised" the student and accused it of making false promises that tourists would not be detained. North Korea has released 22-year-old U.S. student Otto Warmbier from a 15 year sentence of hard labor, officials said June 13, 2017, as former United States basketball star Dennis Rodman arrived in Pyongyang.

He said Otto "is not in great shape right now" and that his family is "adjusting to a different reality".

During his speech to press, Fred Warmbier called on North Korea to release other American prisoners, saying, "No other family should have to endure what the Warmbiers have".

Fred Warmbier said that he doesn't know why North Korea released his son but that the country doesn't do anything out of "the kindness of their hearts".

"Earlier this year, Cindy and I decided the time for strategic patience was over, and we made a few media appearances and traveled to Washington to meet with Ambassador Joe Yun at the State Department", explained Fred, according to Breitbart. The North accused the University of Virginia student of entering the country under the guise of a tourist and plotting against the nation's unity with "the tacit connivance of the USA government".
