J&K: Terrorists holed up in DPS Srinagar, gunfight under way

The attack took place in the evening at Pantha Chowk bypass area in Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir. The forces fired "probing" shots at the building to see if any hiding militant would fire back.

The school was immediately cordoned off but no contact was established with the suspects.

The road would be thrown open for vehicular traffic after clearance operation in the school is completed by security forces, a police official said.

He added that the operation at the DPS (Srinagar) was carried out meticulously. However, their condition is stated to be was stable, said an official.

Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Dr Farooq Ahmad Lone, said the government imposed Section 144 in the area where encounter is going on, "We don't want the locals to face any inconvenience due to law and order problems", he said.

Also, in a freak accident, the service rifle of a policeman went off at the site of the militant attack on Saturday. Given the rise in the number of active militants, such an attack must not be ruled out in the immediate future.

Later the security forces officials announced that both the militants have been "neutralised" and that their bodies were lying inside.

However, they did manage to gain entry into Jammu and Kashmir EDI in Sempora twice, but by rowing a boat across the Jhelum river.

The security forces took all possible precautions to prevent collateral damage.

"Militants attacked on our patrol at about 5:45 in the evening".

"We can't tell right now how many militants there were exactly".

A CRPF sub-inspector martyred and a jawan was injured in the dastardly attack on the convoy close to the Srinagar-Jammu Highway on Saturday.
