Romero edges Garcia to Munich title

No. 837-ranked Andres Romero picked up seven shots in his last ten holes to win the BMW International Open by one stroke on Sunday.

Lagergren enjoyed the round of the day, setting the course alight with a six under 66, that included a run of birdies on the final three holes.

The previous four years had seen the victor score at least 17 under at Eichenried, and Romero catapulted himself into a tie for the lead with six birdies in eight holes.

Without full playing status on any major golf tour, Romero's apprehension revealed itself for the first time as he left his eagle try seven feet short, but he poured in the birdie putt to post 17-under.

Garcia narrowly failed to chip in with his third shot, before Bland's 15-foot eagle putt slid past the right edge to confirm Romero's unlikely victory.

The duo could only make birdies, however, and Romero was handed his second European Tour win.

Richard Bland and Sergio Garcia were tied at the top of the leaderboard ahead of the final round of the BMW International Open after posting rounds of 67 on Saturday.

Garcia, who waited almost two decades to notch his maiden major at Augusta, made seven birdies on Saturday and joined Bland atop the leaderboard, a shot ahead of Swede Joakim Lagergren.

Stenson, the defending champion, went one better with a 69 as he joined Garcia, Richard Bland, Rikard Karlberg and Thomas Detry at 8-under. Thomas Detry and Andres Romero are T-4 at 10 under while Hennie Otto, David Lipsky, Renato Paratore and Scott Henry are T-6 at 9 under.

Bland, who began the day a single shot behind halfway leaders Joel Stalter and Lagergren, bounced back from a bogey at the second with three straight gains from the fourth to reach the turn in 34.

The Englishman, who had played out of the water on the 11th to hole a 20-footer, jumped out into a two-shot lead. The 44-year-old Bland has never won in 412 starts on the European Tour, with his last pro victory coming at the 2001 Challenge Tour Grand Final. "I would say the greens are a bit smaller when it's this windy but if you're still hitting really good shots out there, it's scoreable".
