Tigers release struggling reliever Rodriguez

According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, the Nationals have expressed interest in acquiring K-Rod's services, despite the pitcher's ghastly 7.82 ERA.

Rodriguez, more affably referred to as K-Rod, ranks fourth all-time in saves - behind only Mariano Rivera, Trevor Hoffman and Lee Smith - with 437 and is the active saves leader in Major League Baseball.

Obviously, there's no guarantee that Rodriguez will serve as any type of upgrade over that bunch, but given the state of Dusty Baker's bullpen, the Nats figure to be at least loosely interested in virtually any veteran reliever that becomes available.

He has seven saves on the season. They never ask my opinion.

Detroit's bullpen woes have been a constant issue in recent years, and Rodriguez's decline in 2017 hasn't helped. Before being sent down to AAA, Rondon had posted a 40.50 ERA for the season. After remaining in Los Angeles through the 2008 campaign, he has since made appearances for the New York Mets, Milwaukee Brewers, Baltimore Orioles and Tigers along the way. His strikeout rate was 8.02 per nine innings and batters hit just.214 against him.

There's no guarantee K-Rod can solve what ails the Nationals if he does come to Washington.

The 35-year-old was in the final year of his contract with the Tigers. If he somehow regains any semblance of his former self, and earns enough save opportunities before he retires, he could pass Lee Smith and his 478 saves to sit alone in third place behind Mariano Rivera and Trevor Hoffman on the leaderboards.

Signing a free agent like Rodriguez can be more beneficial than trades because it does not require teams to part with prospects or other big leaguers. Washington should get out and get valuable bullpen pieces before other teams beat them to it.
