Apple Inc. (AAPL) Charges Further Into AR With SensoMotoric

Apple has purchased a small German company that specializes in eye-tracking, MacRumors reported on Monday. Additionally, SMI recently removed some product pages from its website, as well as its jobs portal, contact info, list of distributors and other information. Founded way back in 1991, SMI delivers eye tracking solutions for business, researchers and professionals serving sectors including virtual and augmented reality, usability and human factors, neurosciences, psychology, physical and cognitive training, clinical research and market research. It has also developed eye-tracking technology for VR headsets like the Oculus Rift that can detect and analyze a person's gaze to help reduce motion sickness. Though the terms of the deal haven't been disclosed, the acquisition clearly hints at where Apple is headed in terms of AR. The firm has been into eye tracking glasses and other related systems.

The terms of the deal, and the status of the company's existing employees, is unknown at this time. The company's managing director Eberhard Schmidt and one more director's profiles were also taken off the site. This is the latest sign that the tech giant is developing its own set of augmented reality glasses. The company has also developed a sensor bar that connects to a computer and tracks detailed eye movements at 250Hz. This is the first time it has added VR support to any of its devices. The tech giant's iOS 11 operating system, now available as a developer preview with a fall launch, will become "the biggest AR platform in the world", Craig Federighi, Apple's SVP of software engineering, said in announcing the update. Apple might be able to use the technology to create high-resolution VR and AR experiences. Apart from the rumoured AR glasses, the company is also rumoured to have employed 1,000 engineers to work on AR-related tech, according to Wccftech.
