Facebook hits 2 bln-user mark, doubling in size since 2012

But the number of people who have access to the internet is estimated to be 3.66 billion, which means Facebook reaches about 55 percent.

Facebook's announcement came as it works to redefine its goal, led by Zuckerberg who traveled the United States this year to better understand what people want out of the social network. For that reason, Facebook employs the use of AI to help make better group recommendations to its users.

For years, Facebook's stated aim has been to "give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected", but now the social media giant is placing much greater emphasis on building communities.

To mark crossing the 2 billion monthly users milestone, Facebook is kicking off a Good Adds Up campaign at facebook.com/goodaddsup and in the News Feed that will include "a personalized video to celebrate bringing the world closer together".

"We're making progress connecting the world", Zuckerberg stated in the blog post. And it's why Mark Zuckerberg has been criss-crossing the country on a listening tour that many people cynically assume is the start to a run for President, despite the CEO's denials.

Zuckerberg wants to see if Facebook can help grow community groups across the world.

To that end, an important part of Facebook's new mission is to support its group admins, who the company regards as "real community leaders" on Facebook. In fact, 66% of Facebook's monthly users return each day now compared to 55% when it hit 1 billion.

Your custom video and some stats tied to your profile will be available on this page, which is where Facebook also plans to share "stories of people who inspire us".

Each month, more than 1 billion people use Groups.

In a post written by product director Mike Nowak and product manager Guillermo Spiller, the company shared some stats on the site's usage. Tied for third at 1.2 billion is WhatsApp, which is owned by Facebook, and the Facebook Messenger app. It'll also react when a user wishes someone happy birthday, or when they create a new group.
