In spite of tweet, lawyer says Trump not under investigation

The Washington Post reported on June 14 that Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who was appointed after Comey's termination to oversee the Russian Federation investigation, had widened his probe to examine if the President attempted to obstruct justice, or intentionally tamper with investigations surrounding himself or his associates.

Jay Sekulow, told "Meet the Press" moderator Chuck Todd "The president is not under investigation by the special counsel".

"Let me be clear: the President is not under investigation as James Comey stated in his testimony", Mr. Sekulow said on "Fox News Sunday".

As part of a wide-ranging inquiry into the Trump campaign's possible ties to Russia, FBI and congressional investigators are also reportedly looking into why Kushner met with Sergey Gorkov, a Russian banker who is a close confidant to Russian president Vladimir Putin, in December. The president's earlier tweet, which appeared to term the investigation as a "witch hunt" was not directly in response to any queries regarding the same put to him, said the attorney. "There is no investigation", he added.

"I do not appreciate you putting words in my mouth", he told Wallace.

"Trump has a compulsion to counterattack and is very pugnacious", Gingrich said on ABC's This Week.

"When the president's furious and tweets, it seems to make your job harder", Kilmeade said. Consequently, Comey, as a potential target of the investigation, creates an even greater conflict of interest for Mueller.

Some of Sekulow's exchanges with Wallace were tense and confusing, leading Wallace to say, "Oh boy, this is weird".

"The president takes action based on numerous events including recommendations from his attorney general and the deputy attorney general's office". "And if President Trump were to fire Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein, and then got special counsel Mueller fired, I believe Congress would begin impeachment proceedings".

But it would deal a political blow to the White House in the battle of perception, since the idea that Trump is not under investigation has been at the centerpiece of his administration's defense strategy.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar, a Minnesota Democrat, said on Fox News Sunday that it would be a "disaster" for Trump to fire Mueller or Rosenstein, or to nudge the latter to recuse himself in an effort to slow down the investigation.

Several congressional panels continue to investigate Russians meddling in the USA election which has cast a shadow over the early months of Trump's presidency.

However, the special counsel's independent probe will not affect the House Intelligence Committee's investigation. Angus King, an independent from ME, stressed that the probe will likely last for a long time.
