German foreign minister ready to arrange meeting between Putin, Trump in Hamburg

"Our relationship with Russian Federation is no different than any other country", McMaster said.

"We have seen resilience levels raise instantly as society recognizes being targeted", he said.

Trump's National Security Advisor HR McMaster, however, was non-committal as to whether Trump would bring up the matter of Russia's alleged involvement in last year's USA election.

And sure enough, Trump and Putin will stand face-to-face for the first time when they attend next week's G-20 summit in Germany.

USA intelligence agencies have concluded that Russian Federation engaged in widespread interference in last year's presidential election aimed at helping Trump win the White House.

"We believe that the meeting will take place since the two presidents will be in the same city, in the same building, at the same time".

The United States backs rebel groups trying to overthrow Assad, and Washington angered Russian Federation by launching missile strikes against a Syrian government air base in April in response to what the United States says was a chemical weapons attack that killed dozens of civilians. In particular, Mr Lavrov said that Putin and Trump are going to discuss the normalisation of relationships between their countries, not only a crisis in Syria and Ukraine.

Trump raised Russian hackles this week when the White House said it appeared the Syrian military was preparing to conduct a chemical weapons attack and warned that Assad and his forces would "pay a heavy price" if it did so. "It's whatever the president wants to talk about". Last week, former Homeland Security agency chief Jeh Johnson and other US officials confirmed Russia's meddling in testimony on Capitol Hill.

But Obama's defenders point out that he did raise the issue directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin, directed a comprehensive intelligence review, shut down two Russian compounds, sanctioned nine Russian entities and individuals and ejected 35 Russian diplomats from the country.

He said it was traditional at such events that leaders crossed paths.
