Germany denies permission for Erdogan rally on G-20 visit

Aside from Erdogan, President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are both set to attend the July 7-8 gathering, which will draw 41 delegations from countries and global organizations.

Merkel told reporters Thursday that the "U.S.is an important part of the G-20" and that even though the European summit participants are united in standing by the Paris climate accord even after the Trump administration has chose to pull out, they would work to find "joint solutions" to that and other issues at the July 7-8 summit in Hamburg.

German politicians' statements over President Erdoğan's potential rally in the country were unacceptable, Turkish Presidential Spokesperson İbrahim Kalın said on June 29, describing them as "provocative and malevolent".

Government spokesman Steffen Seibert confirmed in comments to Spiegel that Gabriel's position reflected that of Chancellor Angela Merkel and the federal government at large.

Germany's Social Democratic Party (SPD) leader Martin Schulz also said he "did not want Erdoğan to hold big rallies" in Germany.

The German government said its new rule is a effect of that dispute, though Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel insisted that it is not specific to Turkey. Germany and other European countries have said they would not let the Turkish government hold rallies that promote the return of the death penalty, which if re-implemented would officially end the country's morbid EU membership bid.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan does not consider cancelling his visit to Hamburg in response to Germany's decision to ban his speech before representatives of the Turkish community in the city, a source in the Turkish presidential administration told Trend.

Erdogan made his last appearance before supporters in Germany in May 2015.

To avoid any misunderstandings, however, Mr Gabriel also stated Berlin's diplomatic and political concerns: "We hereby inform Turkey of our conviction that such an appearance in Germany is not possible, and there is constitutional precedent to that effect".

Relations between the two countries have been frayed by a widening range of other issues, including Turkey's jailing of two German journalists.

German parliamentarians have been briefed about the measure.

Erdogan will attend the G20 summit in Hamburg next week where the summit will be taking place from July 7-8.

Ahead of that summit, she is hosting a meeting of the European leaders who will take part in the summit later Thursday at the chancellery in Berlin.
