Shots fired at New York City's Bronx Lebanon hospital, suspect killed

The gunman who opened fire at a New York City hospital was a doctor who formerly worked there, a police official said.

"NYPD is on scene at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital where there are reports of several people shot", NYPD spokesman J. Peter Donald said.

According to a tweet from his office, Mayor Bill de Blasio is being briefed on the developing situation.


Police received multiple 911 calls about someone shot.

According to an official who spoke to the AP news agency, the gunman was wearing a lab coat with a rifle concealed inside it.

"Active shooting in Bronx Leb". Sources said other people are injured in the hospital and they will be evaluated.


The shooter is believed to be a former hospital employee, local law enforcement officials told CNN.

The 120-year-old hospital claims almost 1,000 beds spread across multiple units.


Police told BuzzFeed News that multiple people had been shot and that officers were looking for the perpetrator. Its emergency room is among the busiest in New York City.
