Wimbledon 2017: Any favourites in women's draw? Here is what players think

Petra Kvitova admitted Saturday that the dream of returning to Wimbledon kept her spirits up after she suffered a potentially career-ending injury in a terrifying knife attack at her home. But, come Wimbledon, it could be 18-year-old Cici Bellis' turn to keep the world attuned to her performances.

That total, to Kvitova, was a sign that she is getting closer to the player who succeeds on grass on the strength of a strong serve and powerful forehands.

At one stage the injuries looked so severe her career at the top level was in doubt - but it was saved by the work of top surgeon Dr Radek Kebrle.

The 20-year-old from Latvian already has a Wimbledon title having won the junior girls in 2014.

"Wimbledon is as open but with a little difference compared to Roland Garros and that's because grass is very special - it's a big advantage for those players whose games fit well with grass", Mouratoglou told the WTA website.

The Swede continued to dig in but went long after burying a shot in the net to drop her serve, and Kvitova saw out the win with another ace down the middle.

Kvitova soon found herself a set and a break up, though she led Larsson fight her way back into the match.

First she defeated French champion Jelena Ostapenko, then accounted for world No.1 Angelique Kerber. "I will focus day by day and not complicate things".

Pliskova has discovered the delights of the second week of a Grand Slam at last, and her confidence seems high now after an elbow injury post Roland Garros dented her preparations a lot, seeing her pull out of Birmingham. I felt that I was tested in very different ways, two completely different players.

"I am just happy to be back on the court and that's it", she said. She has reached finals in Doha, Dubai and Miami this year, but has not progressed to the showpiece of a grass-court event since winning Eastbourne in 2009.

"Sitting on the couch at home, I didn't think about Wimbledon at first", said the Czech.

"I got to play against two grand slam champions, the reigning French Open champion, and also the number one player in the world".

In the absence of American great Williams, who has 23 Grand Slam singles titles, and the headline-grabbing Sharapova, women's tennis has an undeniable lack of star power heading into Wimbledon, which gets under way today.

We had a bet before St. Petersburg about me winning the tournament and it happened and here the situation is quite insane because he thought about leaving London after he lost in the final round of qualifying but then he found out he was a lucky loser.
