'Govt to file reference against JIT report'

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said that the ongoing victimization of his family in connection with the Supreme Court-ordered Panama Gate investigations is having an overall negative impact across Pakistan.

The JIT has observed major disparities in the finances of the Sharif family and their known and declared sources of income.

According to Express News' bureau chief Amir Ilyas Rana, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) will challenge the report in the Supreme Court.

Sharif's party leaders, meanwhile, said that the report did not prove any specific wrongdoing on the part of the prime minister.

Earlier today, the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) submitted its final report to the Supreme Court in the Panama Leaks case.

However, the Sharif family's prime defence in the case - Qatari Prince Hamad Bin Jassim bin Jaber al Thani who supported the Sharifs money trail through two separate letters - did not appear before the probe team.

"This report is a political statement which reads like an Imran-nama", the minister said.

The court adjourned Monday's proceedings until July 17, when lawyers for both sides will be given a chance to present their arguments on the investigating team's findings.

It is pertinent to note here that PML-N leaders Khawaja Asif, Ahsan Iqbal and Barrister Zafarullah did a press conference and not only rejected the JIT report but termed it Dharna three (a continuation of sit-ins by PTI) and accused the JIT members of not sticking to their mandate and expediting the investigation to the extent of becoming a trial court itself.

The court ordered that its copies should be provided to the parties in the case, including Sharif family.

The six-member JIT included Federal Investigation Agency's additional director general Wajid Zia, Military Intelligence's Brig Kamran Khurshid, NAB's director Irfan Naeem Mangi, State Bank of Pakistan's Amer Aziz, Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan's executive director Bilal Rasool and Inter-Services Intelligence's Brig Muhammad Nauman Saeed.

The report suggested the National Accountability Bureau, the country's main anti-corruption watchdog, should open a "reference" or case against Sharif and his three children under the provisions of the National Accountability Bureau Ordinance of 1999.

The Prime Minister has been denying any wrongdoing since his name appeared in Panama Papers previous year.
