Williams vs. Ostapenko at Wimbledon as court questions arise

Williams will next face the French Open champion, Jelena Ostapenko, in the quarter-finals.

The site of her 6-3, 7-6 (6) victory over No. 4 Elina Svitolina has a seating capacity of 1,065, making it only the fifth largest for the event.

The other men's last-eight clashes will see defending champion Andy Murray play big serving American Sam Querrey; seventh seed Marin Cilic will play Gilles Muller and 18-time major victor Roger Federer goes up against last year's finalist Canada's Milos Raonic.

Beaten in the 2015 Wimbledon final by Serena Williams, Muguruza has a golden opportunity to lift the Venus Rosewater Dish for the first time while the 23-time major victor is sidelined preparing for the birth of her first child.

The American stands two victories away a remarkable triumph and a win in Saturday's final would allow her to replace Serena, who is taking a break from tennis to give birth to her first child, as the oldest women's grand slam victor.

"It was for sure the best match for a long time for me", Kerber said in defeat.

The second-seeded Halep advanced with a 7-6 (3), 6-2 victory over former No. 1 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus.

Until past year, Williams had not progressed beyond the quarters since 2009, but the five-time victor has now managed consecutive appearances in the last four, having beaten her Latvian opponent 6-3 7-5 in 75 minutes on Centre Court.

He was originally scheduled to feature last on Court 1 but was pushed back when Gilles Muller and Rafael Nadal spent five hours battling on court.

Kuznetsova enjoyed strong starts in both sets but failed to capitalise and it was Muguruza's superior serving and movement that proved decisive on Court One.

The 2015 Wimbledon finalist Muguruza, seeded No.14, is now set to play against the victor between Slovak Magdalena Rybarikova and American Coco Vandeweghe.

But she let five opportunities to close out the match pass her by before being broken twice to allow her Ukrainian opponent to serve for the second set. I love pressure. It's not always easy dealing with the pressure.

Williams simply cranked things up a notch, broke the now completely bowed Ostapenko one more time, then served out comfortably.

"I mean, honestly, I didn't think about that", the 13th-seeded Ostapenko said, then quickly added: "But, I mean, yeah, I think I deserve to play on a better court than Court 12, I guess". "She won lots of matches". So far these two players have played only one match.

This year, in fact, she has lost just twice in 23 matches after winning the first set.

Venus takes a decent lead early on in the first set as she breaks the first service game of Ostapenko.

Since winning her maiden Grand Slam title at the French Open in 2016, Muguruza has struggled to return to the top and this is her first Major semifinal since the Roland Garros win. "It's been so good to me", Venus, who has improved with every outing here, said. "Honestly, they were just cheering for me".

Williams is working towards her 6th Wimbledon title and now holds a 86-14 winning record at the tournament. I am so happy and grateful. I wanted to play, I thought we could have played.
