Microsoft's Default Font May Spell Doom For Nawaz Sharif Government In Pakistan

So in November 2016 Maryam Sharif, Nawaz Sharif's daughter, tweeted images of a disclosure form claiming she was only a "trustee and not the owner" of the properties.

Sharif, who has said she rejects the report's findings, has retweeted a screenshot of a Quora page saying that Calibri had been available in a Windows beta as early as 2004. He said JIT did not ask any question about the documents submitted to the court and that the JIT acted partially, and its report is based on ill-intentions.

Sharif's children were linked to offshore companies in the British Virgin Islands which were then used to purchase expensive property in London, and the Pakistan federal investigation agency believed the properties were bought with laundered money.

Investigators may have found a key piece of evidence in a corruption investigation against Pakistan's prime minister-in the form of a Microsoft font.

The documented dated 2006 was typed using Calibri, however the investigators noted that the font was not commercially available.

They also said that PM's hands were clean as he was not having any offshore company, therefore, he will not resign, adding Panama Leaks was a conspiracy whose directors are overseas and actors are in the country.

He said the language used in the JIT's report reeked of "bias and mala fide intentions", adding his family had cooperated with the panel during its probe to uphold the law and Constitution.

Former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, former union ministers, members of the Senate and several businessmen were also named in the Panama Papers.

Microsoft's default font, Calibri, is now at the centre of a hot legal and political debate in Pakistan and it could very well end up sealing the fate of the country's first family.

A senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader told The Express Tribune the CM, while addressing a meeting of the parliamentary party, also advised Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to strengthen his legal team and fight the case whole hog.

While addressing an emergency Cabinet meeting here, Sharif, 67, termed the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) report a pack of "allegations and speculations", Dawn Online reported.

The court will now decide how to proceed with the report and whether to call for a trial.

The investigative unit was set up in the wake of the "Panama Papers" leak in 2015. But Sharif's ruling PML-N party insists the wealth was acquired legally, through family businesses in Pakistan and the Gulf.
