Elon Musk says successful maiden flight for Falcon Heavy unlikely

Elon Musk, serial entrepreneur and relentless social media hype-man, claims to have received "verbal approval" (whatever that is) from the government to build a big tunnel from NY to Washington, DC that will provide ultra-fast transportation on the southern half of the northeast corridor.

The White House said it has talked to Musk, but gave no indication of when the talks took place or whether any kind of approval was granted.

The other passion is tunneling: Frustrated by L.A. traffic, Musk set up the Boring Company late a year ago to look into more efficient methods to dig tunnels. USA Today reports that a White House spokesman for the Trump Administration recalls the conversations with Musk as "promising".

At some point, papers will have to be filed, government agencies will likely hold public reviews and the long process of building one or more tunnels spanning more than 200 miles will begin. However, formal approval is still needed.

When the SpaceX and Tesla founder revealed the details of his future vision for The Boring Company, however, he described a network of underground tunnels that would transport goods on sleds, and that could offer transportation for cars, cargo and more, using Hyperloop as one potential conveyance option. He first proposed it in 2013, outling a system whereby passengers would be transported at super high speeds via tubes that are constructed above or below the ground.

In a series of tweets, Musk wrote: "Just received verbal govt approval for The Boring Company to build an underground NY-Phil-Balt-DC Hyperloop".

Instead of a three hour drive you could get to Pittsburgh in just 10-15 minutes. The system would also have stops in Philadelphia and Baltimore, Musk said.

On 19 July, Elon Musk announced that his company would be redesigning its Mars landing plans and moving away from the previous Red Dragon lander. After that, he's like to build one hyperloop system on the East Coast and one from Los Angeles to San Francisco.

"This had a lot of re-work", Musk said. He urged supporters to contact their representatives to speed that process. "Which government was it, by the way?", tweeted Howard Sherman, an arts administrator at The New School, a private research university in New York City.
