Panthers release concussed tackle Oher after failed physical

He's been on the NFL's concussion protocol since September.

It's easy to point to Michael Oher's social media post as the primary factor in the Carolina Panthers' decision to cut ties with the tackle on Thursday. Oher was the real-life subject of the 2009 film "The Blind Side" and 2006 book of the same name by Michael Lewis.

"The brain is a scary thing", Oher tweeted after the news of his release broke. In May, Oher was accused of assaulting an Uber driver in Nashville, Tennessee, according to Nashville Police. At age 31, with health questions, it's not clear what the release means for the possibility of him playing in the National Football League again.

After starting the first three games of the 2016 season, Oher sustained a concussion and was inactive for several weeks before being placed on injured reserve. "Michael understood and we expressed that to him", Rivera continued. He started 16 games during the regular season and three postseason games in his first year with the franchise.

Oher was a first-round draft pick in 2009 and played in two Super Bowls, winning a championship with the Baltimore Ravens in February 2013.

Oher, one of the few players on social media to support former Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman after he was sacked Monday, has a Friday court date in Nashville, Tennessee, after being charged with misdemeanor assault.

The Carolina Panthers new general manager has wasted no time getting settled into his new role.
