Errant US bombing kills 12 Afghan security forces

The Afghan government officials dismiss the claims by the Taliban as baseless and part of their propaganda after the group claimed that the son of the group's supreme leader has carried out a suicide attack in Helmand province.

Safi further told The Associated Press that the dead were police officers who were operating with the army in the area.

Confirming the Friday airstrike on Afghan national security forces, the Pentagon described the attack as a friendly-fire incident and issued a statement of condolences for the victims.

"In the strike, 16 Afghan policemen were killed including two commanders". In the statement, the US offered its condolences to the families of the security forces who were killed. He said they had recaptured the post from the Taliban when the airstrike occurred.

The men died when US-led assets targeted a group which may have been mistaken for Taliban fighters.

The bombing took place shortly after Afghan forces captured several areas from militants in the restive district, local officials said.

On Thursday morning, militants hit barriers at the security ring in the Girishk district with two explosive-laden armored vehicles, while the third was hit by security forces before it could reach its target.

Ahmad Faisal Bigzad said that 20 other members of the local police force in the remote region of Tagab were missing after the firefight on July 21. Since the worldwide drawdown in 2014, the Taliban has seized territory across the province, leaving the provincial capital, Lashkar Gah, and the economic hub, Gereshk, as some of the only areas still in government hands. "An accurate number of casualties and details of the incident will be announced later", said Hayatullah Hayat, the provincial governor of Helmand. The remaining 33 are still being held by insurgents.
