Israel 'willing to consider alternatives to metal detectors'

The Palestinians reject the Israeli incitement allegations, saying Israel's 50-year-old occupation of lands sought for a Palestinian state is at the root of widespread Palestinian anger and helps drive violence. "If they (Palestinians) do not want to enter the mosque, then let them not enter the mosque", Tzachi Hanegbi, Israeli minister for regional development and a senior member of the ruling Likud party, told Israel's Army Radio.

Later three Israeli civilians were stabbed to death at a Jewish settlement near Ramallah, in the West Bank, by a Palestinian attacker who entered a home.

Resident Of Jerusalem, Ayat Abu Libdah said "These gates (referring to metal detectors) affect our religion, they should remove these gates because this is a sacred site".

The metal detectors were put in after two Israeli police officers were killed there by Arab gunmen.

Some prisoners have been held in administrative detention for up to 11 years without any charges brought against them.

Later, clashes erupted as residents burned tires and hurled rocks at Israeli troops who had searched the home.

Aboul Gheit also called on the global community, primarily the United States, to shoulder their responsibilities and compel the Israeli government to maintain the status quo of Jerusalem.

Security coordination, largely aimed at a common foe, the Islamic militant group Hamas, had been a constant in frequently hostile Israeli-Palestinian relations.

"They (metal detectors) will remain...."

In addition to the metal detectors, Israel has also began installing sophisticated security cameras at one of the entrances to the compound housing the al-Aqsa mosque, known to Muslims as the Haram al-Sharif and revered by Jews as the Temple Mount.

Three Palestinians were killed and 400 wounded in clashes following Friday's massive Muslim prayers and protests over security measures and restricting access to Temple Mount in East Jerusalem.

Oren said Abbas' declaration may serve a political need but it "cuts off the limb on which he sits".

Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan, an outspoken supporter of the security measures, on Sunday for the first time raised the possibility that the metal detectors might be removed, provided an alternative is found.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called the new security measures an insult to the Muslim world as Arab League chief Ahmed Abul Gheit accused Israel of "playing with fire".
