Blast Near Arfa Kareem Towers In Lahore; 9 Casualties Reported

An explosion killed eight people and injured 30 in the Pakistani city of Lahore, near the residence of Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, on Monday, rescue officials said.

Imran Nazir said that 13 bodies were shifted to the Jinnah Hospital, nine to the General Hospital and four to the Ittefaq Hospital.

At least 26 people have been killed - many of them police officers - after a suicide bomber on a motorcycle struck in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore. The police officials who were assisting in a drive to clear unauthorised construction and the roadside temporary vendors appeared to be the target of the attack.

Officials have started investigation into the matter.

Mr Sharif condemned the attack and called for the best possible medical service for the survivors.

Blast destroyed many families, but terrorists can never destroy our resolve.

Reportedly, a vehicle that was being driven in violation of traffic rules at the site, exploded and it is yet to be ascertained that whether there were explosives planted in it.


Punjab government spokesperson Malik Ahmed Awan said the city district government's anti-encroachment department was conducting an operation against illegal structures in the area at the time of the attack.

"Causalities may rise as the condition of at least five injured is stated to be critical", she said. The reporter told the channel that Arfa Karim tower also got affected due to the blast.

Contingents of Pak Army have also reached the site of the blast. A blast in Lahore in February was initially thought to be a militant attack, but turned out to be a gas explosion.
