Derrick Rose meeting with Cavaliers amid Kyrie Irving trade request

But Irving's business sense could be kicking in, too, leading him to seek a preemptive move before James' expected departure in 2018. Cleveland went a combined 78-152 with Irving running the show in the three seasons preceding James' triumphant return. The Cavs are operating as though an Irving trade is "almost inevitable", according to ESPN's Zach Lowe, who cites several sources in reporting that there is little chance of the Cavs "salvaging their relationship" with Irving. Most expect to see Kyrie Irving in a Cavaliers jersey next season, but with the new office management in Cleveland, anything is possible.

"I understand we're in a very peculiar place", said Irving.

It's really too bad Irving couldn't just accept the burden of playing with one of the best players in National Basketball Association history. Now that Derrick is interested, they might push for Irving's trade to acquire the free agent. That trend extended into the playoffs, as the Cavaliers were outscored by 30 points in the postseason and by 24 points in the Finals against the Warriors when Irving was on the court and James was not. In 64 games, the 28-year-old averaged 18.0 points, 4.4 assists and shot 47.1 percent from the field.

If the Cavs find the most profitable suitor, the process of developing and sustaining continuity begins, and it automatically puts the likes of Golden State and San Antonio laps ahead in that area from the onset of the season.

Kyrie Irving reportedly asked for a trade in early July. In Cleveland, then in Miami and then in Cleveland again, the fear has always been that The King would pack up and leave when he hits free agency.

Suffice it to say, things aren't going well for the Cavs, and it's looking like it won't be getting better any time soon. The Cavaliers had a +8.4 net rating when LeBron James was playing last season, and were 17.1 points per 100 possessions better with him than without him.

For instance (and we all know the proper responses): Would you rather be a star who falls short of a title, or a role player who hoists a trophy?

Whatever the reason - be it good, bad or indifferent - Irving no longer wishes to team with James.
