Cowboys Cut Receiver For Shoplifting Incident, Turns Out Accusation Was Fake News

Original post: The Dallas Cowboys cut wide receiver and return specialist Lucky Whitehead late Monday afternoon, shortly after the team completed the first practice of its 2017 training.

According to online records, a court date was missed July 6, leading to another charge.

Instead, the incident was a case of mistaken identity, as Whitehead's agent, Dave Rich, had said on Monday.

"The police department regrets the impact these events had on Mr. Whitehead and his family", the statement said.

A police Sergeant from Prince William County said that Rodney Darnell Whitehead Jr., who is 25, was arrested June 22 at 1:30 a.m. for taking $40 in food and drinks from an unnamed convenience store. Rich told the Cowboys that Whitehead didn't appear in court because he never received the citation and summons.

Monday morning also marked the first time the Dallas Cowboys found out about any of this, which has Whitehead in some very hot water with head coach Jason Garrett.

The source said the Cowboys are not concerned that Whitehead will file a grievance, as their move was "dealing with ability". They said the alleged shoplifting incident happened hours before Whitehead's flight from Dallas to Washington, D.C., departed.

Whitehead made news last week as well when he claimed someone stole his dog and held it for ransom.

"Not anxious about sending a message", owner Jerry Jones said Monday. Depending on what the situation is, we're going to respond accordingly and do what's in the best interest of the Dallas Cowboys. A auto accident he failed to report to the coaching staff doubled down on Garrett's anger after he discovered the accident based on a deleted Snapchat.

The Cowboys are expected to make his release official today, with Whitehead becoming a free agent if he clears waivers.

An arrest warrant for failing to appear is now out for Whitehead who has an August 10 court date. The situation was resolved after Whitehead told NBC 5 the dog was returned to him, without payment.

Lucky Whitehead didn't do it. He also rushed 20 times for 189 yards and caught nine passes for 64 yards.
