Gunmen attack Kenyan Deputy President's residence

Specialist forces were deployed to find the intruder, who hid in an unfinished building, police chief Joseph Boinnet said in a statement.

Heavy roadblocks have been erected on all roads leading to DP William Ruto's Sugoi home where a security operation was expected to last overnight following an attack early Saturday.

The number of attackers, who are said to be armed, was reported as two but their mission remains unclear.

The armed attackers are said to have forced their way into the home shortly before 1pm on Saturday.

Mr Ruto was not at home at the time.

"The injured officer is undergoing treatment and is in a stable condition", Boinnet said, adding that Ruto's house was secure. The incident comes 10 days before Kenya holds presidential, legislative and regional elections.

Police and officials from Ruto's office were not available for immediate comment.

Ruto's running mate President Uhuru Kenyatta faces a tight re-election contest on August 8 against longtime opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Typically the deputy president's residence is guarded by an elite paramilitary police unit.
