Pakistan to elect new PM on Tuesday

Interesting reactions have been received from across the community following the Supreme Court's verdict on Pakistan's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's high-profile graft case with some describing it just a momentary relief while others contemplate its moral impact on the ousted prime minister. The paper also revealed that Nawaz Sharif's family had bought posh apartments in London through offshore companies.

Senior PML-N leader and former petroleum minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi will run the PML-N government as interim prime minister of Pakistan until Shehbaz is elected as member of parliament.

Because Mr Sharif's party has a comfortable majority in Parliament, Mr Abbasi is expected to easily win the necessary parliamentary vote when it convenes next week.

The five judges reached a unanimous verdict in the Islamabad court, which was filled to capacity.

They said MNA Hamza had been heading an all-powerful Public Affairs Unit in Punjab that had been dealing with MPAs and local body representatives since 2013.

The huge cache of documents allegedly connected to a Panama law firm revealed the financial dealings of some of the world's best-known people.

Three of Mr Sharif's four children - Maryam, his presumptive political heir, and his sons, Hasan and Hussein - were implicated in the papers. The investigation began a year ago when the Supreme Court agreed to hear the case after opposition threatened protests following the Panama Paper leak.

Haq said although the court in Friday's ruling asked the figurehead President Mamnoon Hussain to "ensure continuation of the democratic process", the reality was that the country was facing a political crisis. But the 67-year-old - who hails from Pakistan's richest and most populous province, Punjab - has already made two seemingly unthinkable comebacks, underscoring the unpredictable nature of Pakistani politics.

Under Sharif, Pakistan has experienced economic growth and a marked drop in terrorism.

No Pakistani leader since the country's foundation in 1947, has completed a term.

Parliamentary elections are due in Pakistan next year and Sharif's party is hopeful for a resounding victory despite the fact that the Sharif family will continue to be investigated by the National Accountability Bureau.

"He is disqualified as a member of the parliament so he has ceased to be holding the office of Prime Minister", Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan told the packed courtroom in Islamabad. "The nation has not accepted this decision", he said.

In 1999, General Pervez Musharraf removed the elder Sharif in a previous stint in power. But in a dramatic turnaround, Musharraf launched a coup and eventually had his former boss imprisoned on charges of hijacking for attempting to stop a plane carrying the general from landing.

"You should be proud that your leader doesn't have a stain of corruption on him".

Although political watchers expect political crisis and tensions between the PML-N and the opposition parties, Nawaz Sharif adopted a soft and reconciliation tone when he spoke to reporters after he presided over a meeting to choose his successor.
